Blake’s art and vision

William Blake was a poet, painter, and professional engraver whose spiritual vision shaped his writing and art. In illuminated printing, he engraved poem and illustration together on a copper plate, then hand-coloured the printed page. The image is therefore part of how the poem communicates meaning.

Blake challenged systems that divide life into simple opposites, such as good and evil or body and soul. His idea of complementary opposites treats opposing forces as necessary to human experience and progress. Imagination, shared by God, children, and poets, enables people to perceive beyond physical reality. Blake also criticised the Church and State as institutions that repress freedom, and condemned industrial exploitation, especially of children.

Songs of Innocence and Experience

Published together as a collection, Songs of Innocence and Experience presents two contrasting perspectives. Songs of Innocence evokes childhood and a pastoral world, while Songs of Experience explores adult life, corruption, and suffering.

  • In The Lamb, a gentle creature is linked to purity and a loving creator, associated with Jesus Christ.
  • In The Tyger, a powerful, beautiful yet frightening creature raises a question about the creator of such a world. Its imagery evokes the forging of a creation that contains both wonder and terror.

Read together, the poems invite comparison rather than a simple choice between innocence and experience: their contrast expresses Blake’s belief that opposing aspects of existence coexist.
